SUMMARY:Alber talks at the CIGENE series
DESCRIPTION:Alber will give a talk at the CIGENE Autumn series on Wednesday 25th October\, 12:00-12:40(CET)/06:00-06:40(EST) \nSpeaker: Alber Aqil\, University of Buffalo\, New York\, USA \nTitle: Evolutionary and functional characterization of genomic deletions in humans \nAbstract: A systematic characterization of the function and evolution of structural variants remains an imperative exercise. Here\, we show that balancing selection is a significant evolutionary force responsible for the maintenance of ancient deletion polymorphisms\, and provide a functional characterization of these deletions. However\, many deletions are not in strong linkage-disequilibrium (LD) with single nucleotide variants (SNVs)\, precluding such functional characterization. To solve this problem\, we discuss a new methodology that uses a combination of SNVs weakly in LD with a deletion to impute the deletion\, thereby allowing investigation into the function of many more deletions. \nZoom link: https://nmbu.zoom.us/j/67064421833

SUMMARY:2022 Great Lakes Annual meeting of Evolutionary Genomics
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to have the GLAM-Evogen symposium back in person. It will be held on August 13\, 2022\, at the University at Buffalo. The keynote speaker will be Dr. April Wei from Cornell University. \n  \nSaturday\, August 13\, 2022 \nSYMPOSIUM DETAILS \nLocation: The GLAM will happen in the Center For The Arts at the University at Buffalo\, North Campus.  \nParking: Saturday parking is free on the North Campus. The closest parking lots are Slee or Baird Lots \nThe program: Our registration will start on Saturday\, August 13 @8:30 am and the first talk session will start @9:30 am. Click for the full program. \nPresentation information: \nPosters: Our boards are 48″ wide by 36″ long. Please print accordingly. I highly recommend practicing a 5-minute walkthrough for your posters as it will be a busy meeting. 🙂 \nTalks: The talks are planned for ~12 minutes for 2 minutes of questions. Please plan accordingly. Please send Alber (maqil@buffalo.edu) your presentations on Thursday (Aug 11) so we can upload them to the presentation computer beforehand. \nLightning talks: Lightning talks are a great way to highlight a poster you are presenting. Please prepare a single slide and a talk no more than 2 minutes to explain this slide. Please send Alber (maqil@buffalo.edu) your slides on Thursday (Aug 11) so we can compile and upload them to the presentation computer beforehand. \nBreakfast\, lunch\, and coffee: We will provide breakfast and lunch. We will most likely have sandwiches of different sorts\, including vegan options. If you have any allergies or other dietary preferences (e.g.\, gluten allergy)\, please let Omer (gokcumen@gmail.com) know. In addition\, we will make sure that we have coffee and tea throughout the symposium. \nHappy hour: After the symposium\, we will reserve a place for those interested in staying a little longer. We plan to go to Brick House\, which is 3 minutes drive to the campus. To have a rough headcount for the reservation\, it would be great if you could let us know (gokcumen@gmail.com) if you are planning to stay for the happy hour. \nCOVID-19: We require the participants to be vaccinated and have a negative test 24 before the symposium. Within this framework\, we will ask you to fill/sign a self-attestation form and provide evidence for vaccination (e.g.\, a photo of the vaccination card) when you arrive. We have a limited supply of rapid tests and masks for convenience. \nKeynote speaker: April Wei\, Cornell University \nClick here for Registration (free) \n  \n  \n\n\n\n8.30am – 9.30am \nRegistration – Breakfast/coffee\n\n\n9.30am – 10.20am – Talk Session 1\n\n\n9.30am – 9.45am\nDan MacGuigan – Genomic patterns of post-glacial secondary contact and mosaic hybridization in the Johnny Darter (Etheostoma nigrum) species complex\n\n\n9.45am – 10.00am\nJeremy Summers – The role of climate change and niche shifts in divergent range dynamics of a sister-species pair\n\n\n10.00am – 10.15am\nKatie Pelletier  – Polygenic basis of artificial and natural selection on Drosophila wing shape. \n\n\n10.15-10.30am\nPetar Pajic – A novel mechanism of gene evolution \n\n\n10.30-10.45am\nKwondo Kim – Archaic introgression of structural variation in the human population\n\n\n10.45am – 11.15am \nCoffee Break\n\n\n11:15am – 12:15pm – Talk Session 2\n\n\n11:15am – 11.30am\nAhmed A Elbassiouny – Molecular evolution of metabolic pathways in electric fishes\n\n\n11.30am – 11.45am\nFaye Romero – Food supplementation and lifetime reproductive success in a wild population of squirrels\n\n\n11.45am – 12:15pm\nLightning talks associated with posters \n\nAmanda Erin Wilson\nAmanda Ivanoff\nIskander Said\nKristin Hardy\nMatthew Vandermeulen\nMiraz Ahammad Sadi\nAmanda Neves\n\n\n\n\n12.15pm – 2.45pm \n Lunch and Poster session \n12:45 – 1.45pm Odd numbered posters \n1.45pm – 2:45pm Even numbered posters\n\n\n2:45pm -3.45pm – Talk Session 3\n\n\n2.45pm – 3.00pm\nFeyza Yilmaz –  An unprecedented level of complexity in the schizophrenia-associated 3q29 region of the human genome\n\n\n3:00pm-3.15pm\nAlber Aqil –  Apparent interchromosomal linkage disequilibrium is often a product of duplications\n\n\n3:15pm-3:30pm\nTyler Audet –  Sexual conflict in a long-term artificial selection experiment on Drosophila melanogaster sexual size dimorphism\n\n\n3:30pm-3:45pm\n(withdrawn) Xinru Zhang – Transcription factor binding sites are frequently under accelerated evolution in primates\n\n\n3.45pm – 4.15pm \nCoffee Break\n\n\n4:15pm – 5:05 \nKeynote – Dr. April Wei \nScalable methods for analyzing large-scale genetic variation data\n\n\n5:05 pm – Until done \nSponsor recognition and Award Announcements followed by discussion for the next meeting\n\n\n\n  \nHAPPY HOUR AT BRICK HOUSE \nhttps://www.brickhousetavernandtap.com/ \n
